Like wildfire, it has been a season of memes in various US colleges this month. With every college trying to outdo each other in creating memes poking fun at various idiosyncrasies, that students everywhere have to put up with. Texas A&M meme has been a rage among aggies, raking up more than 9000 likes in Facebook at a short amount of time. Here’s look ten of the most frequently used college memes and stories behind them.
1. College Freshman
This photo belongs to freshman Griffin Kiritsy from University of New Hampshire. He personally acknowledged that it was his photo in his blog. The story behind photo started with a naïve phone interview. A few weeks later, the interviewer wanted to take a few snaps of the kid for publishing his story,to which he gladly obliged. Little, did he know that his photo will go on to become viral meme for freshman in every university!
2. Success Kid
This is an image of child with his fist up and with “knows it all” look on his face. The image was first posted in Flickr account by Laury Griner and baby’s name is Sammy.
Success kid is now 4 years old.
3. Creepy Wonka
This image is of Gene Wilder in the 1971 musical Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The text on this meme is usually characterized by rhetorical, sarcastic or condescending question aimed at belittling someone.
4. Boromirmod
This is familiar to anyone who has watched Lord of the Rings movie series, where Boromir warns about the perils of going to Mordor. This meme is used to signify difficulty in any task that one might carry out.
5. Forever alone
Forever alone guy is rage comic character, that is used to express being single and loneliness. The very first forever alone rage comic was published as April fool’s joke is shown below.
From there it spread through 4chan, memebase rapidly becoming popular.
6. Y U No guy
Y U No guy expresses frustrations of daily life vented out by various people. Y U No guy origin’s lies in Japanese anime series. Like all most memes, the popularity of this meme is owed to memebase and Tumblr.
7. First World Problems
The first known use of “first world problems” came from the lyrics of a Matthew Good Band song entitled “Omissions of the Omen”, which was included as a bonus track on their album Last of the Ghetto Astronauts from 1995. The lyric in question is as follows:
“Wait for me if I don’t show up
Take from me this hypocrite’s cup
And somewhere around the world
Someone would love to have my first world problems
Kill the moon and turn out the sun
Lock your door and load your gun
Free at last now the time has come to choose”
8. Futurama
This is an image of character called Fry in Futurama series, expressing deep sense of thought at a problem. The look originated in the "The lesser of two evils " episode in season 2 of the animated sitcom.
